For today's post, I met up with Leanne, who lives with her husband Martin in a enviable loft in Rotterdam. Leanne is the owner of Naboo Illustratie, her own hand lettering shop. Both Leanne and Martin have a background in design and they've created a great place together. But it wasn't really love at first sight. Leanne: "Martin fell in love with it right away, but I didn't really like it at first. He kind of had to convince me, but now we both love our home." And let's be serious: what's not to love with this view and interior?
"I'd describe my style as bold, industrial and modern. I believe our house matches our interests. We both have a background in design and we really like interiors with a special kind of something, something bold maybe. And I also believe our style kind of grew on the house: it already has something industrial to it, so there you go!
"Our style definitely got influenced by the book The Life Changing Magic of Tidying Up, by Marie Kondo. Ever since I've read it, we've become much more aware of what we want to put in our home. We got rid of all things unnecessary and we only kept the things we really love. It has definitely made us love our interior more. We used to change the interior almost every week at first, but now I feel like the place is done. I think we've finally found our style, like, for the two of us together. We've been living together for eight years now, haha, so it's about time! I like redecorating, don't get me wrong, but we're actually really satisfied with the way our home is right now.
Where do you go for inspiration?
"Pinterest is my number one source for inspiration and I also like the Dutch design magazine VT Wonen."
What's your favorite spot in your home?
"I really like our couch. The hammock is great as well, we actually use it as our garden. When I come home from work, I like to lie down in the hammock and enjoy the evening sun. But most of the time I just like to snuggle up on the couch. We've had it for about six years now, can you believe it? When you lift the pillows, you can see a slight difference in color, but over all it's still good and it's really comfy!"
What are your favorite interior stores?
"Brandwise, I love House Doctor. I bought three glass boxes there, which were really expensive, but I'm so glad I bought them! I also really like Serax, which has great laboratory-like stuff. Hay and Ferm Living are also among my favorites.
"My all time favorite interior store is Illums Bolighus in Copenhagen. It's a huge warehouse with only the prettiest Scandinavian design. Closer to home I really like the Hay store in Amsterdam and Depot in Rotterdam. Depot is quite expensive, so it's more just for looking than actually for buying, haha!"
What's your most precious object?
"That would be the copper pot we inherited from my grandma. When we were little, all of the grandchildren loved to play with it. My grandmother always put wrapping paper in it, as she used to recycle it. There's still some paper in it, actually."
What's on your wishlist?
"I want a new bathroom! The one we have now is still the same as when we got here. It's functional, but not very pretty. I would also love to havee a marble tray."
And what would never be allowed in your home?
"Oh that's difficult! I think bright colored stuff wouldn't get in that easily. We've got about three bright things, but I kind of regret buying all of them. Martin really likes them though, that's why we've got them. I myself am more of a neutral color person."
Do you have any tips for my readers who want an interior just as beautiful as yours?
"I love DIY. I often see expensive things in stores that you can easily make yourself. I actually created the soap dispensers on our kitchen counters myself. You can buy them for about 40 euros, but you can also create a label yourself and stick it to a less expensive bottle. And it looks just as pretty! And Pinterest is also a great source for DIY projects."
Where did they get their pretty stuff?
- Living area: Hay, Ferm Living & Xenos tables // Naboo Illustratie & H&M pillows // Serax vases // Esprit couch // DIY chair
- Dining area: Naboo Interieur cabinet // Philips lamps // Eames chairs
- Workspace: Ahrend chair // Naboo Interieur desk // Bloomingville concrete house
